2016 Environmental Excellence Award – Technology and Conservation

Congratulations to Spectra Energy for being selected as this year’s winner of the SGA Environmental Excellence Award in the Technology and Conservation category. Bill Brett of Spectra presented the winning program at the 2016 Environmental, Safety & Health, and Training Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland.

Here’s a brief excerpt from the submission for the award:

As regulatory and public scrutiny has increased over the past several years, Spectra Energy took steps in 2014 to improve its ability to track environmental compliance performance during construction through the development of a new web-based tool, referred to as the tracker. Moving away from the less reliable written “punch list” approach for tracking compliance requirements on projects (e.g., BMP installation/maintenance, working within the right-of-way, spill prevention measures, etc.), this tool allows environmental inspectors to convey to contractors real-time notifications of problem areas and non-compliances by using an internet platform, accessible by approved users from any computer, smartphone or tablet.  The speed, accuracy and easy accessibility of the information allows the contractors to mobilize resources in response to those notifications in a much more timely and effective manner. The tracker also features a “dashboard” style summary page where users at any time can check compliance performance by various sortable categories such as time period, spread, contractor, environmental inspector, etc. The dashboard also depicts progress in a statistical manner that allows users to see performance trends, which facilitates opportunities for specific course corrections and positive reinforcements.

Rolled out on a major project in 2015, the tracker not only achieved the goal of improved compliance performance but also enhanced communication between Spectra and contractor personnel, which in turn fostered better working relationships. The success of this approach is now in use on other Spectra projects and is slated to be used company-wide, ensuring heightened compliance performance across all business units.
