Bill Cantrell updated


William N. Cantrell, President & CEO

William N. (Bill) Cantrell is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Southern Gas Association (SGA) and its subsidiary, the Gas Machinery Research Council (GMRC). With more than 40 years of experience, he has become a trusted leader across the energy industry and developed a passion for working to advance the field. Bill leads SGA as the organization works to link people, ideas and information across the natural gas industry.

Previously, Bill was named President and Chief Executive Officer at SourceGas, now part of Black Hills Corp., an SGA member company. In 2009, he led SGA as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Beginning his career at Tampa Electric Company, Bill advanced through several technical and senior management positions, including director of the merger transition with Peoples Gas Companies to become part of TECO Energy. He served as President of Peoples Gas Companies from 1997 to 2009.

He received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tampa and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.


Gary Hines

Gary Hines, Vice President, PE, CAE

Gary W. Hines is the Vice-President of Operations and joined the SGA in 2011.  Prior to joining SGA, Gary worked for Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. in Owensboro, KY.  There, Mr. Hines held the responsibility of oversight for the operations control center and back office measurement functions.  Mr. Hines has 15 years of experience in the natural gas transmission pipeline business with the last 10 being in various positions of management including Operations, Gas Control, and Measurement. Prior to his tenure in management, he has held various positions in project engineering, project management, and environmental remediation programs at both Southern Star and The Williams Companies in Tulsa, OK.

Gary holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, MO and a Master in Business Administration from Colorado State University located in Fort Collins, CO. Gary is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Missouri and has also earned his Certified Association Executive credential.



Kent Hobart, Vice President

Kent joined the Southern Gas Association On March 1, 2012.  Kent brings more than 25 years of industry experience with him to SGA, including time with natural gas, electric, water, investor owned and municipal utilities. Included in his broad base of experience are executive level leadership roles in Sales, Operations and Customer Service with TECO Peoples Gas.

Kent received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida Southern College.


   Jane Butler

Jane Butler, Vice President

Jane Butler is Vice President for Southern Gas Association (SGA) and Gas Machinery Research Council (GMRC). Responsibilities include serving as controller for both organizations, corporate sponsorships and various conferences, committees and other association management duties. 

She has been associated with SGA since 2002 and brings more than 25 years of accounting experience with her.
