Handling the Media During Pipeline Emergencies
In
1981, Southern Gas Association, in cooperation with Robert A. Knowlton
and Associates of Houston, Texas, developed a videotape program to show
gas pipeline, distribution and service personnel how to handle the news
media during an emergency. This video, The Media, Emergencies and You!
went on to become the most successful and widely used program of its kind.
Today, decades later, Knowlton & Associates has produced
an all-new, updated media relations training program for the natural gas
industry entitled Handling the Media During Pipeline Emergencies.
Pipeline recreates an actual field emergency, in this case
a third party's accidental puncture of a gas main in a residential area.
The program includes a comprehensive participant's manual and illustrates
and explains 28 typical mistakes in dealing with on-scene news media.
Most importantly, this new program clearly explains and demonstrates a
prove nine-point system for reducing the risks encountered during an interview.
This video shows you:
- How to confidently provide a proper overview of the facts;
- What to say in an interview and what not to say;
- How to diplomatically sidestep dangerous questions and
end an interview when you decide to;
- How to diplomatically avoid an interview entirely, if
necessary.
A contractor accidentally punctures a gas main in a residential
neighborhood. It's the most common type of gas industry accident and yet
a gas company supervisor digs a hole for his company when he talks to
the news media about it.
Are your personnel prepared?
This simple training system has been used for over 15 years
by major corporations in the United States and Canada. It recognizes that
crises are rare, and field employees usually do not have the skills necessary
to effectively deal with a media interview. The training system is so
logical and easy to apply that your employees will be able to put it to
use months or even years later.
In a single session you will learn
- What the most common mistakes are in a news interview:
- Who a company spokesperson should be and what is expected
of him or her during a crisis
- How to end an interview when YOU decide to
- What the community deserves from you and what the media
are hoping for;
- How to take control of an interview in a positive non-adversial
way;
- How to recognize troublesome, no-win questions and diplomatically
avoid answering them
What the program includes
In addition to the videotape, each program includes a participant's
manual and a detailed media relations pocket guide. This guide is an excellent
source for quick reference and details may of the points brought out in
the program. One free guide is included with each program purchase.
