Fundamentals of Leak Survey and Detection

As responsible corporate citizens, gas companies devote much time and effort to leak detection -- people are the primary reason for this: employees, customers, families and the general public.

Why search for leaks? Because it helps deliver a safe product, it makes good business sense and it protects people.

Southern Gas Association offers a video training program designed to help meet your training needs. This program covers important aspects of leak detection including:

  • why leak detection is important
  • causes and characteristics
  • federal regulations and requirements
  • recordkeeping
  • location methods
  • detection equipment
  • leak classification
  • priority grading
  • safety procedures

"Fundamentals of Leak Survey and Detection" is designed to be used with your company's leak detection training as a refresher course, or as an introduction to leak investigation.

Developed by the SGA Distribution Technical Training Committee to follow techniques for dealing with gas leaks safely and effectively.

Module 1 - "Leak Location and Detection Equipment Methods" covers the various methods available to search for leaks, and explores the different types of leak detection equipment available. (19 minutes)

Module 2 - "Leak Classification and Priority Grading" - explains the recommended systems for classifying leaks, and how to develop a formal system of leak classification and priority ranking for repairs (24 minutes)
