Natural Gas Transmission (Introduction) Self-Study
Program
This
program is sponsored by SGA Transmission Technical Training Committee.
The new "Introduction to Natural Gas Transmission self-study
course" is now available. This new version is completely updated and features
an easy-to-read format. "Key terms" and "terms being defined" are identified
with icons, and definitions can be found in the glossary. The self-study
is filled with examples to assist the learner in understanding the material.
Each chapter begins with an introduction outlining the material, and ends
with a "self-check" summarizing its important concepts. Over one hundred
pictures and graphics are also included to make the learning experience
more effective.
Purpose of this book
This book will introduce the reader to the natural gas transmission
industry. It is intended for employees new to the natural gas industry,
although it will also be helpful for others with an interest in an overview
of the industry.

regulations, ratemaking, deregulation
- Characteristics of Natural Gas: Composition, pressure,
temperature, gas laws, base conditions and units of measure
- Natural Gas E & P: Origins, formations, exploration
geology, leases, drilling, offshore, well completion
- Gas Processing: Conditioning, separation of fluids, sweetening,
dehydration, odorization, quality
- Pipelines and Transmission: Production and market areas,
transportation, pipeline design, safety, maintenance

aquifers, salt formations, LNG
- Transportation and Services: Open access, tariffs, types
of transportation and service, contracts, measurement
- Gas Control: Assuring continuity of service, lowest operating
costs, operating plans
- Uses of Natural Gas: History of U.S. energy use, consumption,
categories of use, environmental impact
Appendices
- History of Natural Gas Transmission in the United States
- The Cannonball Diary (a non-technical discussion of drilling
operations)
- Building a Natural Gas Pipeline
- Natural Gas Reserves
The SGA Transmission Technical Training Committee has sponsored
this project since 1987 and in 1998, because of the dynamic natural gas
industry, identified a need to completely revise and update this material.
This self study is 297 pages in length and comes in a 3-ring binder. It
explains in easy to understand terms, how natural gas is produced and
moved from wellhead to burner tip.
