Workshop Outline

Module 1, Fundamentals of Gas Measurement

1) Discuss/present compressibility
2) Define a "standard cubic foot"
3) Ideal gas law
4) Real gas law showing how super-compressibility comes into play
5) Absolute pressure vs gauge pressure
6) Degrees Rankine vs degrees Fahrenheit
7) An example converting actual volume measured to standard cubic feet
8) An activity for the teams to convert actual volume measured to standard cubic feet
9) Introduce the differing types of measurement/meters; positive displacement vs inferential; briefly, diaphragm, rotary, turbine, orifice, ultrasonic

Module 2, Diaphragm Meters


1) Basic operation; cut-away view, internal measurement mechanism, temperature compensated vs non-temperature compensated, case pressure ratings
2) Sizing tables, typical applications, accuracy, rangeability
3) An example, sizing a diaphragm meter with given parameters
4) An activity, sizing a diaphragm meter with given parameters
5) Accuracy test, using a "prover"

Module 3, Rotary Meters


1) Basic operation; cut-away view, internal measurement mechanism, temperature compensated vs non-temperature compensated, case pressure ratings
2) Sizing tables, typical applications, accuracy, rangeability
3) An example, sizing a diaphragm meter with given parameters
4) An activity, sizing a diaphragm meter with given parameters
5) Accuracy test, using a "prover"

Module 4, Turbine Meters

1) Basic operation; cut-away view, internal measurement mechanism, temperature compensated vs non-temperature compensated, case pressure ratings

Module 7, Pressure Regulator Fundamentals

1) How regulators work; three essential elements, restricting, measuring, loading
2) Ideal regulator vs actual, discussing droop, lock-up tail, all vs flow rate
3) Different types of regulators, with cut-aways; spring, diaphragm, self-operated, pilot operated, instrument controlled, sliding stem, ball, applications

Module 8, Regulator Station Design

1) Sizing regulators, sonic flow (critical flow), sub-sonic flow (non-critical flow), determine intermediate pressure
2) Example sizing regulators for a known load and pressure parameters
3) Activity sizing regulators for a known load and pressure parameters

Module 9, Overpressure Protection

1) Why, settings (Code limitations)
2) Different types, pop, slam-shut, relief, monitor regulator (upstream, downstream, working monitor, series regulation), self operated, service regulator with internal relief, pilot operated, oil seal, weights, mercury
3) Sizing a relief, pressure drops across piping, fitting, valves and relief
4) Example, sizing a relief
5) Activity, sizing a relief
